Why BlackBag
Better access is not enough. The visit has to be useful.
BlackBag exists to make specialist judgment easier to reach – and to help every consultation feel prepared, focused, and worthwhile.

The black bag went where the patient was.
The original doctor’s bag represented readiness: the right knowledge, carried to the person who needed it. BlackBag takes its name from that simple idea – not to recreate the house call, but to make expertise less dependent on distance.
A modern consultation can happen by video. What makes it valuable is still recognizably human: preparation, attention, explanation, and sound judgment.
Four principles, applied to both sides of the visit.
- Start with the person
- Patients should be able to describe what they need in familiar words. Clinicians should be able to focus on the conversation.
- Make important details visible
- Who you are meeting, what the visit costs, and what happens next should be clear before anyone commits.
- Use technology quietly
- The best tools reduce repetition and administrative work without getting in the way of the conversation.
- Keep professional judgment human
- Technology can organize information and support documentation. Medical judgment remains with the clinician.
What BlackBag is, and what it is not.
BlackBag is
- A focused specialist consultation
- A way to bring a health question, relevant records, and the right expertise into one scheduled conversation.
- An additional perspective
- A second opinion or specialist point of view that you can carry back into your ongoing care.
BlackBag is not
- Emergency care
- Urgent and life-threatening concerns need immediate local care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
- A replacement for your care team
- Your regular clinicians remain responsible for treatment, prescriptions, monitoring, and hands-on care.
A patient should leave with more clarity than they arrived with. A clinician should be free to focus on clinical judgment.
